Manchester United travel to Huish Park this Sunday afternoon to face Yeovil Town in the 3rd round of the Fa Cup. This is what the Fa Cup is all about, with the big boys travelling to the minnows. Yeovil have nothing to lose going into this match and Manchester United nothing to gain. If Manchester United win this tie, the reaction will be well it’s only Yeovil Town. So all the pressure is on Louis Van Gaal and his Manchester United team especially after crashing out 4-0 to Yeovil’s League One rivals MK Dons in the 2nd round of the League Cup. Manchester United and Yeovil have only played each other on two other occasions, both of them coming in the Fa Cup. Manchester United won on both occasions with 3-0 and 8-0 wins.
The last meeting between the two sides was on 12th February 1949, with the tie being played at Maine Road with Old Trafford being rebuilt after being bombed during the Second World War that had pretty destroyed the stadium. Manchester United manager Matt Busby was in the process of building his first great side as Manchester United welcomed Yeovil to Manchester in 1949. United were the holders of the Fa Cup having beaten Stanley Matthews and Blackpool in the previous year’s final. Busby sent a message to the Yeovil chairman H.A Smith ahead of the tie that read
A Great Welcome Awaits You In Manchester, Everyone Is Looking Forward To Your Visit
An estimated 6,000 Yeovil fans made the trip North, with local factories and businesses arranging their annual outings around the fixture, it was estimated that would be a crowd of around 55,000 to 60,000 fans inside the ground but the actual attendance for the game was 81,565. United ran out 8-0 winners in the game thanks to goals from Jack Rowley(5), Ronnie Burke(2) and Charlie Mitten. Despite running out easy winners in the game Busby was impressed with the performance of the non-league team.
Yeovil Played Hard And Never Gave Up Trying. Their Performance Was A Credit To Non-League Clubs
The Fa Cup is Manchester United’s only realistic chance of winning a trophy this season and they haven’t won the Fa Cup since 2004 when they beat Millwall 3-0 in the final thanks to goals from Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy(2). This is the eleventh season since Manchester United last won the Fa Cup and Darren Fletcher is the only player still in the squad to have won the Fa Cup with United. Robin Van Persie being the only other player to have a winner’s medal having won it with Arsenal. Manchester United and Arsenal are the most successful team in the Fa cup with eleven victories in the competition each.
Manchester United come into this tie on a ten game unbeaten run in the Premier League, having won 7 and draw 3, they have struggled away from Old Trafford this season so will be looking to get a win at Huish Park to improve their away record this season and will be hoping a win on Sunday will give them confidence going into the upcoming away games in the Premier League. Yeovil go into the tie bottom of League One with 20 points from their twenty-three games and are facing back to back relegations having been in the Championship last season and have lost their last three games in League One.
What changes will Manchester United make to their team for this game, will Louis Van Gaal play a similar line-up as to what he’s been playing in the Premier League in recent games? Will United return to a back four with Luke Shaw and Rafael returning to the starting line-up? Will Paddy McNair or Tyler Blackett get a game? Will Ander Herrera, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson all get starts in this tie?
