Opinion: Wilson Will Benefit From Loan Move

By Andy Hyslop

  • Given first-team debut in final home game of 2013/14 season, scoring two goals against Hull
  • Made 18 appearances for first-team, scoring 4 goals
  • Made England under-21 debut last week, scoring only goal of the game

James Wilson needs to play games to continue his development, if he’s not going to get that at Manchester United at the moment. Then he needs to move away from the club in the short-term.

Wilson needs first-team football

Wilson is only 19 years-old but he needs more regular first-team football if he is going to continue his development. He made his debut for the Manchester United first-team at the end of the 2013/14 season. Playing against Hull City in the final home game of the season and scoring two goals.

He made 17 appearances for United last season, but the majority of these were short substitute appearances. In these 17 appearances, he only managed two goals but that is understandable when he didn’t get many minutes on the pitch.

This summer has seen United manager Van Gaal deciding not to extend Falcao’s time at the club, whilst also allowing Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez to leave the club permanently. Whilst also allowing another attacking player in Adnan Januzaj leave the club on a loan deal.

You would have to say United’s only striking options are the moment are Rooney, Wilson and┬ádeadline day┬ásigning Anthony Martial. Wilson himself was linked with a deadline day move away from Old Trafford. With Premier League teams Tottenham , Everton and West Brom all said to be interested.

I feel for the time being, that Rooney will continue in the central striker role, being flanked by Memphis and maybe Martial. Therefore I feel it may be in the best interest of Wilson to move away from United on loan for a short period.

He won’t be able to move to another Premier League team on loan at the moment, but could go to one of the top teams in the Championship. Derby County are said to interested in taking him on loan, after their difficult start to the season. This could be a good move for Wilson. Derby are a team that look to play good passing football and you would expect them to be challenging for promotion come the end of the season.

The fact remains would United and Van Gaal be willing to let leave at this current team, with the lack of options he currently has in the striking positions. The loan window for Championship sides opens on September 8 until November 25. I’m a number of Championship will want a young hungry striker like Wilson
