Will Wilson Get His Chance??

The Daily Mirror this morning reported that young Manchester United striker is going to get his chance in the first team in place of the misfiring Dutch Striker Robin Van Persie. They say the United boss is considering giving Wilson his first start of the season, with Van Persie being the likely fall guy. Van Gaal has apparently already warned his players that no-one is guaranteed a place in his team regardless of their reputation. Van Persie is clearly struggling to find his best form and maybe Van Gaal feels that he needs to taken out of the firing for a few games.

Van Persie has managed 3 goals in 8 appearances for Manchester United this season. To me he hasn’t looked anything like the player he showed us he was in his first season. Maybe age and all the injuries he’s had over the years are finally catching up with him. Maybe he performs better when he is the star or the main man in a team because this is what he was in his last season at Arsenal and his first season at United. I think it’s fair to say these were the two best seasons of his career, both in time spent on the pitch and the goals he contributed to his team.

Wilson replaced Van Persie in final minutes of the recent Derby against City and he looked dangerous in the few minutes he was on the pitch. Wilson was given his United senior debut by stand in boss Ryan Giggs in the final home game against Hull last season. I think it’s safe to say he impressed everyone who was there to see him bag a brace in this game. Last season he scored goals at every level for United having started the season in under-18s and played and was top scorer for United’s under-19s in UEFA Youth League. He then stepped up to the under-21s where he carried on scoring goals on a regular basis before making his senior debut in the game against Hull.

Wilson is clearly a player who Van Gaal and probably everyone at United feel has great potential, he is clearly too good to be playing in the under-21s league. Whether he can be a regular starter for the first team at the moment remains to be seen but we won’t know that until he has been given his chance. I feel he really is star of the future and see no reason why he can’t be a star in the present. I think one the reasons why we let Welbeck and Chicharitio leave the club was so that Wilson would get more opportunities in the first team while continuing to play for the under-21s.

So with Falcao probably still missing through injury will Wilson be given his opportunity against Crystal Palace. I feel Van Gaal will probably go back to the diamond formation in midfield with two forwards playing, so hopefully Wilson will be given the opportunity to partner Wayne Rooney or even Robin Van Persie himself in the United attack.

  1. I don’t see why James Wilson doesn’t get a start LVG has given the youth a few chances that they might of not had with another manager and the first team seem to be constantly injured I think RVP as a back up isn’t all bad
