- Lingard has risen through the ranks at Old Trafford
- Warrington born Lingard has revealed to MUTV how he came to join United and who he turned down
Jesse Lingard has shown a real desire to earn a career at Old Trafford and has been rewarded with an run in the first-team of late. His good performances for the Reds in the last month, has seen him earn his first call-up to England senior team.
Just a few days before he received the call-up to the national team, Lingard spoke to Manchester United’s in house TV channel MUTV about his early years at Old Trafford.
When asked about his progression from playing junior football in Warrington to playing in playing for Manchester United’s first-team in the Premier League and Champions League.
Lingard talks about how he was playing for his local club Penketh United and how Manchester United scout Mike Glennie came to watch him. Going on to say that Glennie spoke to his granddad and offered him a trial at United. But United weren’t the only club interested in Lingard.
Lingard revealed that Liverpool were also interested in him and he had to make a chose between the North-West rivals. Lingard was only a young boy but it was also United for him, there it was an easy chose for Lingard.
Lingard has seen a lot of the players he came through the ranks leave club permanently or are currently out on loan with no real prospect of getting into the United first-team.
Lingard talks about his physique holding him back in his early years at United and some question why he is only just making the breakthrough at 22 years of age. Maybe it has taken him more time than others to grow into his body.
Whilst having several loan spells away from the club, Lingard has been training with the first team on a regular basis for the last few seasons. Starting when Sir Alex was still manager, when he would train with the first-team every now and then.
Once David Moyes came in, he trained with the first-team more often, then since Louis Van Gaal’s arrival he has trained every day with the first-team. He may have established a more regular place in United’s starting eleven had it not been for an injury on the opening day of last season.
