  • Also praised adaptability of Ashley Young

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Arsenal, Van Gaal spoke to the assembled media on Thursday afternoon. He answered questions on the performances of Chris Smalling and Ashley Young.

United go into the game against Arsenal on the back of four straight wins, following the defeat to PSV. On Wednesday night, United beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford. Coming from behind to do so. Though United got the points, they were hanging on at the end. Van Gaal claimed after the match that his players were tired.

The first questioned he was asked was about this and how he would manage it. Would he rotate his squad for the Arsenal. Resting some players that played against Wolfsburg. His response was that the solution to this problem is recovery. Stating that as the press conference was being held less than 24 hours after the game, he didn’t yet know the state his players would be in until Saturday. As they have a day off on today.

Next Van Gaal was asked about the form of Smalling this season and what part he has played in his development. Van Gaal’s response was that it was all down to the player. It’s his hard work. Stating that he is there to help him as he is with any player. Offer advise and go through analysis of his game but in the end its down to the player.

Van Gaal was also questioned about the adaptability of Ashley Young. He has played in four positions this season, left and right-wing. He started at left-back against Ipswich. Then came on at right-back at the start of the second-half against Wolfsburg.

Van Gaal stated that he can play in a lot of positions and more importantly, he is willing to play anywhere that the manager asks him to. Young is a team player, his first thought is for the team. Not many players are like this.
