- Varela earns call-up to Uruguay squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers
- Varela has emerged as competition for Darmian and Valencia in the right-back for United
Guillermo Varela recent good performances for Manchester United has seen the defender being called up to the Uruguayan senior squad for the first time.
The call-up means that Varela could make his International debut in one of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Peru.
Despite joining United in May 2013, Varela had to wait until late last year for his first-debut. That came as a half-time substitute against West Ham and made his first start against Wolfsburg in the Champions League.
The right-back is one of the players to have taken advantage of United’s crippling injury list. There was talk that he could be set to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window.
A move to Italy and Genoa but the player has spoken recently how Van Gaal persuaded him to stay in Manchester and has been rewarded with an extended run in the first-team.
Varela has started all of United’s last four games and hasn’t put a foot wrong, giving Van Gaal a difficult decision to make with the return to fitness of Darmian.
