- Guillermo Varela promoted to first-team squad for West Ham game
- Uruguayan spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, playing for their second string
Manchester United manager has promoted another player from the club under-21 team to first-team duty this weekend. The injury to Marcos Rojo has seen Uruguayan included in the first-team squad for the first time.
Louis Van Gaal is unable to call on four of his regular defenders, with Shaw and Valencia being out long-term and Rojo and Jones also suffering injuries in recent weeks.
Recent games has seen both Axel Tuanzebe and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson being promoted to senior squad. Tuanzebe was on the bench against Crystal Palace, while Borthwick-Jackson has been on the bench for games against West Brom and Leicester.
Borthwick-Jackson is once again in the senior squad for the West Ham at Old Trafford tomorrow, and he has been joined by right-back Varela.
Varela joined United on June 7 2013, meaning he was David Moyes first signing at the club. The signing came after he had a two-week trial with the club in ay 2013 after impressing United’s scouts at the 2013 South American Youth Championships.
His first season at United saw him making 21 appearances for the under-21s. He then joined Real Madrid on loan for the 2014/15 season. Playing for their second string under Zinedine Zidane. Making 33 appearances for them and impressed Zidane so much that he hinted Real may try to sign the defender on a permanent deal.
That move never happened and Varela returned to Manchester for the start of this season. Despite not being given a squad number at the start of the season, he was included in United’s Champions League squad for the group stages. So far he has made seven appearances for the under-21s this season.
