- Guardiola contract with Bayern only runs till the end of this season
- Has been linked with a move to the Premier League with City
- Reports this morning that his preferred destination may be United
Manchester United’s board could have a big decision to make in the summer. Pep Guardiola is coming to the end of his contract at Bayern Munich, with reports linking him with both City and United.
United’s manager Van Gaal has another season to run on his contract after this season. Van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford after they had finished 7th in Premier League, he did what was asked of him last year by getting United back in the Champions League.
The aim this year must be to challenge for the Premier League title once again and United will do that despite many pundits and more importantly United fans criticising the style of play of under Van Gaal.
Since his arrival, he has moved players out of the club that he didn’t want, whether you agree with or not on some of the players that have left the club. For me you can’t put an argument up for keeping any of them other than maybe for the fact of keeping just in case you have an injury crisis.
He has introduced young players into the United first-team squad and shown he is not afraid to throw them when he’s needed to.
You can’t argue with Guardiola’s record in terms on trophies. I his four seasons in charge of Barcelona, he won four League Titles, two Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, two European Cups, two European Super Cups and two Fifa Club World Cups.
After leaving Barcelona, he took a year out before taking the job at Bayern Munich. Sir Alex Ferguson has recently said he was a contender to replace him but had already agreed to go to Munich.
In Munich he took over a team that just completed the treble of League Title, German Cup and European Cup. His first full season in Germany brought four trophies, retaining the League Title and German Cup. Whilst also winning the European Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.
Would swapping Van Gaal for Guardiola mean that United start playing more attacking football. After all that is what the majority want to see.
I don’t believe this a guarantee, for me Guardiola is a similar coach to Van Gaal. A possession based coach. He may be able to add the required star quality to the United squad that would bring attacking football but I believe Van Gaal will do that in the summer.
Whether or not Guardiola preferred destination is Old Trafford. For me you would have to question whether he would join United at this time. I believe he’s a coach that goes to teams that he knows are equipped to challenge both domestically and in Europe.
