Manchester United unveiled the three latest additions to their squad at a press conference in Seattle. Louis Van Gaal declared he is delighted with the purchases the club has made so far and feels his squad is in good shape ahead of the coming season. He praised the work of the club, especially Ed Woodward in bringing Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian to the club.
Van Gaal feels all the new additions are very good players is delighted to have them on board in time for the pre-season tour.
I’m very happy because, in my opinion, they are all very good players, that is why we have bought them
I’m very happy that they’re here before the tour – we can prepare all the team elements with them. There’s also Memphis Depay and now the three new signings. It’s much better than last year.
Our selection was not in balance (last season). I wanted balance with my midfielders, so you could expect that I should buy two holding midfielders. Morgan I think is the type who can play in our system and our philosophy.
Van Gaal also stated that Manchester United only buy players that will add and contribute to the squad. Stating we are not buying new players just for the sake of it. Every player in the squad needs to make a contribution and that is no different for these new signings.
When asked about what Italian right-back Darmian brings to the squad, Van Gaal stated he believes he’s a player who first and foremost is a defended. Stating that he needs to build up an understanding with the centre-backs. Whilst also saying he believes Darmian can add in the attacking play as well.
I always want a player who can defend in the first place. Matteo has very good orientation. He is also fast, he’s a reasonable header of the ball – that’s also a plus. And he can build up play.
Van Gaal managed German midfielder Schweinsteiger when the pair were at Bayern Munich, so he not only knows him as a player but also as a person. This is important for Van Gaal because he needs to know that he’s bringing the right characters into his team.
I’m not only looking to the qualities of the player but also how he is as a human being.
I believe he will do his utmost best to perform in the same way he did at Bayern. I have a lot of confidence in him.
Whereas Darmian and Schweinsteiger have never played in the Premier League and that will be the major question mark against them. Schneiderlin has not only been playing the Premier League for the last three seasons but also in English football for seven seasons with Southampton.
Morgan has played in the Premier League. The question is with Bastian and Matteo: can they cope with the Premier League? I’m fully confident they can.
Despite praising the abilities of his new singings, Van Gaal has warned his new signings, they will have to fight for their place in the starting eleven, just like the rest of the squad. That is why he has signed these players, to add competition in the midfield and right-back areas.
They know already that they have to fight for their position. It’s never secure. Morgan has fight with Schweinsteiger, Carrick, and Blind. These are the players who can play in the centre of midfield.
Darmian has to fight with Valencia. He knows that and Valencia knows that also. And Michael Carrick knows as well – I told him at the end of last season.
