- Varela and Borthwick-Jackson are both included once again
- They are joined in 19-man squad by Nick Powell
- Schneiderlin, Rooney, Jones, Herrera and Rojo join Valencia and Shaw in missing the trip
Manchester United left for Wolfsburg this morning with a 19-man squad that included on surprise name. That is the name of Nick Powell, his last appearance for the United first-team came in the 4-0 defeat to MK Dons last season.
Young full-backs Varela and Borthwick-Jackson have both been included in the first-team squad once, with United missing three first-team defenders in Shaw, Jones and Rojo. Paddy McNair makes the trip despite being withdrawn at half-time against West Ham.
Schneiderlin, Rooney, Herrera and Valencia join Shaw, Jones and Rojo in missing the crucial group b tie in the Champions League.
20 year-old midfielder Sean Goss is also included in the squad. It’s not the first time he’s joined the first-team squad. He was included in the travelling squad for the pre-season tour and came on as a second-half substitute against PSG. Though he is yet to make his competitive debut for United.
The surprise name though is that of Nick Powell. Powell has recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines to appear in the last two games for the under-21s.
Powell’s contract with United is up in the summer and is not expected to be offered a new deal at Old Trafford. Powell was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signings and much was expected of him after impressing for Crewe.
If Powell makes it into the matchday squad, he will be given his fourth different squad number in his four seasons with United.
