Manchester United under 21s moved to within one point of clinching the Barclays Under 21 Premier League title with a 4-0 win over Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad at Old Trafford last night. United granted free entry for the game as they do for every under 21 game and there was a crowd of 16,708 at Old Trafford to see United get the win thanks to goals from Wilson, Januzaj, Fletcher and Willock. United’s starting line-up included Blackett, Januzaj and Wilson who have all experienced first team football this season and will be looking to show Louis Van Gaal that they deserve to be part of the first team squad in the coming seasons.
This win puts United four points in front of Liverpool, who have already completed all there fixtures for this season. The only team with any chance of catching United are Chelsea, who are six points behind United with two games to play, therefore they must hope that United slip up in their final game of the season. United’s final game of the season comes against Manchester City, this time away from home. No one can say that Manchester United don’t deserve to win this league, losing the least games and having the best defence in the league, which has been superbly marshalled by captain Tom Thorpe. Thorpe can feel himself unlucky not to have had a call up to the first team this season, given all the injuries the first team has suffered in defence.
United took the lead in the fifth minute of this game through James Wilson, after City had the best of the opening minutes, United absorbed the early pressure and hit City on the break. Adnan Januzaj starting out wide but had drifted in field and picked the ball up in the centre circle and played the ball through to Wilson who beat the City offside trap before outpacing the City defence and slotting the ball in the bottom corner after giving the City keeper the eyes. City enjoyed most of the play in the rest of the first half, with United looking to City on the counter. City failed to breakdown the resolute United defence, with their only efforts coming from long range, United almost made it 2-0 when Joe Rothwell turned his man and chipped over the on rushing City keeper Gunn, his effort narrowing going past the post.
United started the 2nd half the better and made it 2-0 when Rothwell won the ball in midfield before playing in Januzaj on the left hand side of the area before he cut inside across the City backline and firing into the City net. Januzaj then almost scored directly from a corner but Gunn managed to scramble the ball away. United then scored two more goals in the space of a few minutes, both coming from substitutes. The first coming on 79 minutes when Wilson crossed for Ashley Fletcher who scored in consecutive games after scoring the winner against Southampton last week. Fletcher then played in fellow sub Willock, who calmly curled the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
