Manchester United under-21 midfielders Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell have both made the move to Barnsley on a 6 month loan deal. The pair will be at Oakwell until the 3 January 2016. Barnsley will be hoping the midfield duo can help the club mount a promotion challenge in League One in the coming season.
For 20 year-old Pearson it sees him returning to Oakwell after a loan spell at the club in the second-half of last season. During that spell Pearson made 21 appearances for the League One side and Pearson is looking forward the return to Yorkshire.
I had a great time here last season – making my professional debut – and want to pick up where I left off but help take us that one step further.
For Rothwell also 20 it will be a second loan spell away from Old Trafford, having joined Championship side Blackpool for the second-half of last season. Blackpool bottom of the Championship at the time of Rothwell joining and he only made 3 appearances for the seasiders as they suffered relegation from the Championship. Rothwell is looking forward to the move having heard great things about the club from Pearson.
I’m really excited to be here. I’ve heard a lot about the place from Ben Pearson. He couldn’t speak highly enough of his time here and I just can’t wait to get going.
I had no hesitation about coming here after speaking with Lee Johnson. Barnsley almost made it into the League One play-offs with Ben here last season so, hopefully, we can go one better this time.
Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson is delighted to have secured the services of the midfield pair until January, believing that both will be an asset to the Barnsley midfield as they look to push for promotion to the Championship.
Ben really impressed me last season – both when he played against and for me. He is a tremendous talent with energy to burn and is a good passer of the ball. He will be an asset in our midfield and I’m really looking forward to working with him again.
I’m really excited to have Joe on board as well. We are very lucky to have two highly-rated midfielders on our hands and I’m really grateful to Manchester United for allowing us to bring them both here.
