With Falcao’s loan not working at Old Trafford in the season just finished, and Robin Van Persie’s time at Old Trafford maybe coming to an end, I think it’s safe to say that a striker must be top of Manchester United’s shopping list. Two strikers that are being linked with United in today’s press are Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and Gonzalo Higuain of Napoli.
Benzema is a player United have always admired and in fact tried to sign him six years ago, before he eventually went to Real Madrid. Benzema scored against United as a 20 year old for French side Lyon. It was rumoured that Benzema was interested in a move to Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson handed Benzema a United in the tunnel after that match. Benzema scored 22 goals in 38 matches for Real Madrid last season and provided 11 assists for his team-mates. Would this goal return be enough to be Manchester United’s main striker, in one word no. Manchester United need a striker that is going to score them at least goals a season in all competitions.
Another striker linked is Gonzalo Higuain of Napoli, Higuain once a team-mate of Benzema at Real Madrid. Higuain left Madrid to move to Napoli in July 2013 and has an impressive goal return for the Italian club. Scoring 50 goals in 96 appearances since his move to Naples. That’s a goal every other game, which you can’t argue with from you main striker. Despite having a good goalscoring record throughout his career, it is thought that Higuain may not be mentally strong enough in the bigger games.
There is no doubt that either of these strikers are known to be available, then Manchester United will have to fight off competition from other top sides in England and across Europe.
