Manchester United endured a mixed 2015 with highs and lows throughout the year. Here are our top five moments from 2015 for Manchester United.
Liverpool v Manchester United (21st March 2015)
Louis Van Gaal was under immense pressure when the Red Devils were going through a poor run of form.They entered the series of tough fixtures on a positive note with an impressive 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspurs.
The Red Devils travelled to Merseyside to face an inform Liverpool side. Van Gaal continued to use his 4-3-3 formation which kept Juan Mata on the right flank of the front three.
The Spaniard delivered his best performance in an United shirt as he scored both the goals in the match that lead to a 2-1 victory for Manchester United.
The Spaniard neatly finished the first goal after a brilliant through ball from Ander Herrera splitting the defensive line of Liverpool.
It was his second goal for which the match would be remembered as Mata executed a perfect scissor kick to double United’s lead.
The brilliant performance from Manchester United’s number eight earned Anfield a nickname of Juanfield from the United supporters.
169th Manchester Derby (11th April 2015)
Manchester United’s record in Manchester derby in recent years has been atrocious. The Red Devils went in the Derby with a good run of wins but were instantly on the back-foot as Manchester City took the lead through Sergio Aguero in the early stages of the game.
The Old Trafford side then dramatically came back into the game through an Ashley Young equalizer, then Fellaini headed home to give United a 2-1 lead at half-time.
The Red Devils added more misery to their neighbours when Juan Mata and Chris Smalling scored in second half to take United’s tally to four goals in the match.
Sergio Aguero scored again in the final moments of the match to give City some consolation. The Red Devils enjoyed their most complete win over their neighbours in the recent time.
Schweinsteiger signs for Manchester United (13th July 2015)
Manchester United kicked off their summer buisness quiet early after wrapping a deal up for Dutch sensation Memphis Depay in May.
The Red Devils were then quiet for some time before the monumental capture of German captain Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Schweinsteiger ended his 17 year tenure at Bayern Munich for a new challenge in Manchester. United signed two world class players in Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in the previous summer window but that didn’t pan out well.
The Red Devils were excited with the prospect of Schweinsteiger in the midfield as he could bring the leadership qualities in the team and help out the young squad to do well in the coming season.
Return to Champions League (26th August 2015)
Manchester United finished fourth in 2014-15 season and a secured a return to the Champions League. United though had to win a play-off to reach the group stages.
The Red Devils were handed a trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge. In the first leg the Red Devils won 3-1 courtesy of two wonder goals from Memphis Depay.
The Red Devils wrapped up the fixture in the away leg with a thumping 4-0 victory which included a hat-trick from captain Wayne Rooney.
The Red Devils were back in Europe after a year without European football at Old Trafford.
Martial debut against Liverpool (12th September 2015 )
Louis Van Gaal was heavily criticised for lack of goals in the start of 2015-16 season as the Red Devils were scrapping 1-0 wins.
The Dutchman offloaded Angel Di Maria, Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez while the team was lacking spark in the final third.
After qualifying for Champions League, Manchester United signed Anthony Martial from Monaco for a staggering £36 million.
The young French forward was a surprise name which came out of nowhere. The 19 year old got off to a great start to life at Old Trafford when he came on for his debut against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The French international scored a brilliant solo goal after beating two defenders and slotting it home past Simon Mignolet.
