Should Manchester United Supporters Be Worried By Lack Of Transfer Activity?

With the transfer window now officially, Manchester United have only made one addition to their squad, in the shape of Dutch international Memphis Depay.

With an extoritional amount of World Class footballers ‘linked’ with Manchester United, should supporters of the 20-time champions be disappointed, or even worried with the lack of players actually singing for United?

Well, I personally wouldn’t be. The fact that United are linked with such an array of class players could be credited as a sign of positive intentions made by the club. These rumours, whether they are revolved around Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, or Borussia Dortmund Centre-Back Mats Hummels, should be exciting the supporters, surely?

Manchester United were in fact one of the first top-flight clubs to enter the transfer market, securing the signing of PSV Eindhoven Winger Memphis Depay, who had been linked with a variety of clubs including United’s bitter rivals Liverpool.  You can even look back to last season, where a signing of a similar style to Memphis Depay in Angel Di Maria was made. Many believed that a buy of this calibre would never occur, but United bewildered the minds of many, with a club-record fee to sign the Argentine magician.

Sergio Ramos, another renowned defender is also on United’s radar. A £28.6million offer for the Real Madrid player was made by United. The Red Devils made it clear and simple that one of their aims was to sign a centre-back of pure quality, and experience, so the like of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones can learn and mature into the same kind of player.

Regardless of this, the transfer window has not officially begun, With United’s reputation rumours are also inevitable. Considering this, lack of transfer activity shouldn’t necessarily be a problem at this moment in time.

  1. It worries me, immensely.
Liverpool have gone out and signed their targets already, proving it can be done.
The worry comes from so many seasons of being linked with top players only to find ourselves with a panic buy at the end of August or worse still, no-one because ‘we’ are happy with our squad.
Those seasons where we didn’t improve our squad are coming back to bite us now. It was only SAF’s incredible knack of squeezing more out of the team that saved us. That is why we are on our second season of ‘needing’ to spend £150m on players.
That need is real, but let’s see how we get on signing a quality centre-back, defensive midfielder, right back and centre-forward.
If those 4 positions get filled then I’ll take my hat off to Ed, but if not you can kiss goodbye to any credible title challenge.

    • Hmm, true, this has been a problem in recent years. But I personally feel van Gaal has a completely contrasting outlook. He spent £150million on players quite conveniently last time out. The only player signed with only minutes to spare was Radamel Falcao.

Liverpool bought players hastily this season and last season. Even with the millions spent in this manner, did they get the European football, let alone the title that they truly desired?

Past times have caused annoyance for many fans that is true, but thetre is always room for improvement, I just feel that the signing of Depay is a spearhead in our transfer spending spree, leading on to hopefully more signings of the same standard.
