As we have seen this season, right back is a position where we need to strengthen. Rafael is almost certainly on his way out after struggling to get into the starting eleven when fit. Valencia has performed well at times but if we want to compete alongside teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, we will need a proper right back who can attack and defend. So lets take a look who be potentially wearing the No.2 shirt at Old Trafford next season.
The first player we will look at is Dani Alves, His contract expires this summer and many clubs are interested in him. Alves is a player who loves to attack, that is because he started out as a winger at the age of 10 but his father re-positioned him as a right back due to the lack of goals. Alves joined Sevila in 2002 on a loan deal, after a decent season, he was involved in the 2003 FIFA world youth championship, he was named 3rd best player and this led to him signing with Sevilla permanently. In 2006 Alves was close to joining Liverpool but Liverpool couldn’t match their 8 million asking price. Eventually Alves signed a new contract and he helped Sevila to win the 2006-2007 Uefa cup.2 years later he joined Barcelona for £23 million and he was the world’s most expensive defender. He went on to be one of the best right backs in world football and winning 18 trophies with Barcelona, also he was named in the FIFA Pro World 11 in 2011,2012,2013. Van Gaal is a big admirer of him and he would bring that attacking threat which we have lacked this season and his experience of winning the big games would be key. In addition he could shoot with his left and right foot and he is a free-kick specialist.
Darmian is a player who is not a big name but would be a good addition. Darmian can play right back, left back and centre back. In 2000 he joined Ac Milan’s youth system. 6 years later he made his first team debut at the age of 16. Since then he’s played for Padova and Palermo, he currently plays for Torino. His best season was in 2013-2014 where he helped Torino to a 7th place finish and they also qualifed for the Europa League. He was named Serie A’s right back of the year. From what we understand is that Manchester United have scouted him a lot and if he was to sign, he would offer us plenty of things such as his versatility. Also he is known for his good quaility of tactical awareness, his pace and stamina. He has been compared to Antonio Cabrini who was one of the best defenders in this history of Italian football.
In recent days I have heard rumours of Gregory Van Der Wiel potentially leaving Paris St Germain due to the lack of game time. His breakthrough came in 2008-2009 season with Ajax where he played 32 league matches and 43 matches in all competitions, since then he improved into a talented young right back, he was awarded the Johan Cruyff Award for young player of the year. He later signed for PSG and he didn’t become a relguar starter. Van Der Wiel would be a good addition to our squad because he has pace to attack and defend but he’s not a modern day full back because he started as a centre back.
Clyne is a player who has been linked with us since last summer. Clyne’s first team was Crystal Palace. He made his debut in 2008 and he became a first team starter for Palace. In 2010-2011 season he was the youngest player in football to play every single game of that campaign and he won Crystal Palace’s player of the year award. This earned him a move to Southampton. Since then he has played 94 games for them and scored 3 goals. Clyne offers his blistering pace and his ability to make over-lapping runs which is a huge feature of his game.
