Van Gaal: Pressure On Us To Qualify

By Andy Hyslop

  • Pressure on us to beat Club Brugge and qualify for Champions League
  • Only Phil Jones unavailable due to illness
  • Marouane Fellaini available despite domestic suspension

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal faced the press ahead of Tuesday night’s first-leg play-leg against Belgium side Club Brugge.

Van Gaal was questioned about the tie against Club Brugge and the pressure that is on Manchester United to qualify for the Champions League proper. The prospects for Adnan Januzaj after his first start and goal against Aston Villa on Friday night. The form or lack of it of Wayne Rooney and his opposite number at Brugge Michel Preud’homme.

Van Gaal On Tuesday’s Tie

There’s a lot of pressure because our aim and goal is to reach the Champions League group stage. These kind of matches are difficult. Brugge can defend very well. They can attack also, so it shall be a difficult match. That is why the pressure is high.

Van Gaal On Pressure To Qualify

The board, the players and the fans want to participate (in Europe), so the pressure is high. We have to show our quality against a good team, but it is not an easy game.

Van Gaal On United’s Form

We have a long way to go this season, but we have had a better start than last year and also two clean sheets. That says about our structure and balance, so I have confidence that we will develop ourselves to a much higher level and I expect that also from my players.

Van Gaal On Rooney As Striker

All the media has written for one year that I have to put him in the striker’s position, so it’s amazing that after two games you’re doubting your own opinions, I cannot understand that. I have always confidence in my players.

Van Gaal On Januzaj Opportunities

He had to compete with 24 players last year, and he is 20 years old. The characteristics of a young player is that he’s not consistent and he has to show that this season. It’s possible, but at a club like United, you never have a guarantee of a position in the top eleven. Every player here knows that, and because of that we have a very good team spirit.

Van Gaal On Preud’Homme

I think his teams are always organised, very good structure. You can see his view and his philosophy and I respect that. I believe we were opponents (when I was a player), I don’t know the results at that time. If I lost, then I’ll have to make it equal, and then I am very happy!
