- United head to Goodison Park on Saturday looking to bounce back from Arsenal defeat
- Morgan Schneiderlin spent that game sat on the bench
After a long international break, Premier League resumes this weekend. Manchester United travel to Goodison Park to face Everton.
The Red Devils will be looking to bounce back from a horrific 3-0 defeat at the Emirates just before the break against Arsenal. Louis Van Gaal’s side were outclassed in every department of the field by Arsenal. The defence looked out of position and the midfielders were outran by Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
United need to bounce back and in Everton they face a stern test. The Blue side of Merseyside have started the season well and have collected some good wins including one against the defending champions Chelsea at home.
The Toffees look threatening on counter attack .They would be looking to do the same thing which Arsenal did, punishing us on counter.Everton have became the bogey team for United for past few years specially at Goodison park so United need to start the match on front foot.
Van Gaal got his selection completely wrong specially in midfield against Arsenal. The midfield duo of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick were exposed badly. This is the perfect match for Van Gaal to start Morgan Schneiderlin in the midfield as it is one of those crunch games.
The Frenchmen has neither been exceptional nor poor at the start of his United career. He has been one of the finest midfielders in Premier League last two years. The partnership of Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku has been flourishing this season.
United need to break the linkup between this two if they want to stop Everton’s attack. Moreover from the bench Steven Naismith is also a threat for the Red Devils but to cope this attack prowess Schneiderlin could be the answer.
The former Saints midfielder can be deployed as a defensive midfielder or a box to box midfielder.Schneiderlin is best known for his attribute of breaking the play.
In a midfield three along with either of Michael Carrick/Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ander Herrera/Marouane Fellaini if he is being deployed as a box to box midfielder he can help United both while defending and attacking as he also has immense workrate.
When United are dominating and if they are losing the ball,Schneiderlin could effectively press in an attempt for retention of ball.He has averaged more interceptions than any players in last two seasons in Premier League.
Carrick and Bastian pressed well but due to their age could not recover and help the defence out when Arsenal attacked. While Schneiderlin is young and has got legs and workrate so he could help out while defending as the midfield shape will change in a more defensive manner which will give defence more assurance and space will be very less for the likes of Barkley and Naismith to flourish.
The only aspect which Schneiderlin needs to improve is his contribution while going forward. He has been very cautious while playing killer pass in the final third. But the team has players like Juan Mata,Herrera,Rooney and Memphis Depay.
So Schneiderlin may play more of a protector role than trying to create something magical in final third while going forward. With a win necessary on agenda Van Gaal needs to start Schneiderlin at Goodison to give United stability and the composure in the midfield.
