Manchester United head to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday in a game that is pivotal in the race to finish in the top four in the Premier League. Manchester United go into this game in fourth place with Liverpool two points behind them in fifth place. Both teams won last time out, with United beating Tottenham 3-0 and Liverpool winning 1-0 at Swansea. This is always a big game regardless of league position. With both teams and their supporters desperate to get the better of the other. With the league positions the way they are it’s probably the biggest game between the two sides for a few years, as a win for either side will have an effect on the other sides chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for next seasons Champions League. A win for Liverpool would see them overtake United in the table and knock them out of the top four, while if United get the win they will put a five point gap between them and Liverpool.
Liverpool have probably been the form team in the Premier League since Manchester United beat them 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season. United won that game thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie. There many occasions in that game that David De Gea saved Manchester United and ensured they took the three points. In the thirteen Premier League games since that defeat Liverpool are unbeaten, winning ten of those games. Whilst United have suffered just one defeat in the last thirteen games, winning eight and drawing four. Both teams are in good form going into this game.
Not only did Manchester United get the 3-0 win against Tottenham in their last league game but you would also have to say it was their best performance not just this season but for a good few seasons. In that game was Michael Carrick returning to the starting line-up after being out injured and he showed in this game how important he is to Manchester United. He is a shield to the defence, he doesn’t make rash challenges because he reads the game so well. He doesn’t panic when he’s on the ball and he’s always looking to play the ball forward when he can. Also in this game Daley Blind reverted to a left-back position and linked up well with Ashley Young to attack Tottenham down the left hand side. Whilst on the other side Antonia Valencia and Juan Mata, Mata starting a game for the first time in two months and replacing the suspended Di Maria linked up well down the right hand side of the pitch.
After the performance against Tottenham, surely Louis Van Gaal will start with the same line-up, as every player who started the game as Tottenham deserves to play again, Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal need to find what their best eleven is, especially for games such as this. On Liverpool’s current form you would have to say that Manchester United have to be at their best once again if they going to come away from Anfield with the three points. Liverpool are slight favourites with the bookies going into this game which you would expect being the home team. While if you fancy a bet on first goalscorer, the favourites are Daniel Sturridge at 9/2 for Liverpool and Wayne Rooney at 11/2 for Manchester United.
