Middlesbrough v Manchester United: Three Points Needed Before International Break

Middlesbrough v Manchester United

  • Final Premier League game of March sees United facing managerless Middlesbrough
  • Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera unavailable due to suspension
  • Pogba and Blind unlikely to feature

In the final game before the International break, Manchester United travel to the Riverside Stadium to face managerless Middlesbrough. With both sides needing the three points for different reasons.

Manchester United are in need of the three points as they look to secure Champions League football through a top four finish.

Meanwhile Middlesbrough are struggling at the wrong end of the table and will start this game in the bottom three. The home side haven’t recorded a win since they defeated Swansea 3-0 at the Riverside on December 17.

That run of results saw Middlesbrough chairmen Steve Gibson deciding this week that the club needed a change of manager.

Aitor Karanka was sacked on Thursday after three and a half years in charge of the club. Steve Agnew will take charge of Middlesbrough for this game.

Starting In Seventh

The Premier League results on Saturday mean that Manchester United will start this game seventh in the table. A point behind both Everton and Arsenal.

They will start the day six points behind fourth placed Liverpool, with Liverpool in action against Manchester United later on Sunday.

Three points for Jose Mourinho’s men would see go into the international break fifth in the table and no more than six points off the top four.

Team News

Jose Mourinho will be without both Zlatan Ibrahimović and Ander Herrera for this game, with both ruled out through suspension.

Ibrahimović is serving the second of a three game ban following his violent conduct charge. While Herrera is serving the first of a two game ban following his dismissal against Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Paul Pogba is likely to join those two on the sidelines after appearing to suffer a muscle injury against Rostov on Thursday night.

The manager will also have doubts over Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Daley Blind. Both Rooney and Martial have missed the last two games with knocks.

While Blind appeared to suffer from conclusion after an aerial challenge on Thursday night.

One of the big questions over Mourinho’s team selection will be whether he sticks with three at the back for this game.

Mourinho opted for a back three in both games against Rostov as well as the FA Cup tie with Chelsea.
