Confirmed: Manchester United Complete Signing Of Matteo Darmian

Manchester United have completed their second signing of the summer of transfer window, with Italian international Matteo Darmian moving to Old Trafford for a fee believed to be around £13million.

25 year-old Darmian joins United from Italian Serie A side Torino. Darmian started his career in the AC Milan youth ranks but failed to force his way into the Milan first-team. He spent a season on loan at Padova in the 2009/10 season and then a season with Palermo before moving to Torino at the start of the 2011/12 season.

After four years with Torino, Darmian has been granted his move to Manchester United with the best wishes of everyone at the Italian club. His coach at Torino, Giampiero Ventura says that Darmian deserves his transfer to Manchester United, saying:

We have worked together for some time, because of his desire, humility and will to achieve things, it’s right to grant him the opportunity to realise his dream of playing in a Champions League team that will fight to win it.

Torino club president Urbano Cairo, told Darmian last summer that they couldn’t sell him because they had already sold important players in Immobile and Cerci but they would review his situation this summer.

I promised him we would review his situation this summer. Football is like this and it’s normal that an extraordinary man like Matteo wants to try to win the Champions League. Torino can’t win the Champions League.

Manchester United confirmed that they had signed Matteo Darmian on Saturday evening, shortly after Torino had confirmed the move on their website and thanked Darmian for his four years of service. United confirmed that Darmian has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year.

For Darmian it’s a dream come true to be joining Manchester United and he is forward to working with his new manager Louis Van Gaal.

It’s a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. I have loved my time at Torino and would like to thank the club and the fans for everything they have done for me. I am sure they can understand that when the opportunity to join the biggest club in the world came along it was something I had to do. To work with Louis Van Gaal, a manager that has achieved so much in football is an exciting prospect.

Louis Van Gaal feels he has bought a top-class right-back, who also has the ability to play on the left side of the defence and feels that Darmian will be a great addition to the team.

Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left. He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League. Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, United also confirmed they reached an agreement with Bayern Munich over the transfer of Bastian Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford, subject to medical and personal terms being agreed.
