Manchester United strolled into the fourth round of the League Cup, with a 3-0 win over Championship side Ipswich Town. Courtesy of goals from Rooney, Pereira and Martial.

Its not the first time that Van Gaal and McCarthy have come up against each as manager, McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland beat Van Gaal’s Dutch side in 2001 to virtually end the Dutch hope of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.

Van Gaal got his revenge on McCarthy with this win. Van Gaal made numerous changes from the starting line-up against Southampton for this one, with only De Gea, Smalling, Blind, Mata and Rooney keeping their places. Valencia and Young filled in the full-back positions, with Pereira getting his first start of the season. Playing on the left wing.

United took the lead after 23 minutes, when Blind played a ball forward towards Rooney, who controlled the ball on the edge of the area before shrugging off marker and slotting the ball past the keeper into the net.

Ipswich dominated the start of the second-half, pressuring the ball and causing United’s defence problems with a few dangerous crosses. But United then started to get a grip on the game.

Pereira Off The Mark

After 60 minutes they made it 2-0 thanks to a fine strike from Pereira from the free-kick. Curling the ball home from 25 yards in front of the Stretford End for his first senior United goal.

Pereira put a solid display state of the season, always providing a threat to the Ipswich defence, I think he is someone who can provide competition to the United first-team, despite his young years.

On 69 minutes United made a double change, with Jones replacing Smalling for his first appearance of the season after illness. And Martial replaced Mata.

Martial completed the scoring in injury-time. Fellow sub Memphis chested the ball into his path before he took the ball on and coolly slotted it past the keeper into the bottom corner. With what is becoming a Martial trademark finish

Van Gaal was happy with his night’s work. He has managed to rotate his squad, giving players that haven’t played regular football this season games. Avoided any injuries and seen his team through to the fourth round. Where United will play Middlesbrough at Old Trafford. The tie will take place on 27/28 October.

The result was great. We don’t have injuries. I brought in players, I rotated players. Phil Jones has played a lot of minutes. So I’m a happy coach.

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling (Jones 69), Blind, Young, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Mata (Martial 69), Fellaini, Pereira, Rooney (Memphis 81) Substitutes Not Used: Romero, Darmian, Carrick, Schneiderlin

Our Man Of The Match: Schweinsteiger

PereiraDespite goals from Rooney, Pereira and Martial. Our man of the match goes to Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German once displayed his class in the centre of United’s midfield. Everything went through him and he controlled to the game from the first to the last minute.
