- United take the lead but suffer 2-1 defeat to Danish side
- Ravaged by injuries United suffered further blow of losing De Gea minutes before kick-off
Manchester United hit new low in their poor season as the Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat against FC Midtjylland at MCH Arena.
The Red Devils will now have to do well to win comfortably in the return fixture at Old Trafford and ensure qualification for Round of 16 in Europa League.
United dominated possesion and were rewarded for it as Memphis Depay scored the opener after a good cross from Jesse Lingard. The hosts instantly responded with a goal just before the half time.
Manchester United continued domination but were not able to find the winner. The Old Trafford side became hapless after the Danish side took the lead. A very poor game for United but here are the tits and bits we learnt from the game.
Carrick should not be a starter when everyone is fit
Louis Van Gaal insisted last season that Michael Carrick is going to be a key member for his team during his tenure. The Englishman justified the Dutchman’s praise by performing well last season and Manchester United always suffered in his absence.
The 34 year old has not endured the same success this season as he has looked very poor in numerous games. He was again atrocious against the Danish champions.
Van Gaal has boasted the midfield ranks with Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Whenever the duo are fit, Carrick should surely not walk into the side as he continues to regress.
No passion and grittiness shown by the players
United are known for showing grittiness on the pitch whenever they are trailing. The Red Devils have lost that attitude completely this season.
The players sulked completely after the second goal of the visitors. They misplaced passes in midfield and didn’t create anything in final third.
The team lacks leadership which lead to the embarrassment. The experienced players disappointed the younger players. Van Gaal needs o find perfect motivation for the players to give their utmost best on the pitch in order to save the season.
Herrera should not be used in a midfield two
Herrera was regarded as the perfect midfielder United have been craving for so many years. The Spaniard enjoyed a good debut season.
He is not able to build on it as he continues to be underwhelming this year. He was not helped by the injuries and the midfielder has been in and out of the starting eleven.
Van Gaal used him in a midfield three last year and he was hugely successful in that position. Van Gaal has been deploying him in a midfield two this season and he has suffered there.
He often loses the ball, exposing the defence and is not able to contribute to the attack. The Spaniard was also poor along with Carrick on Thursday night and Van Gaal needs to stop deploying him in the defensive midfield role.
Mata continues to show his inconsistency in no. 10
The most disappointing attacking threat on the night for United was Juan Mata. The Spaniard has been given a run of games in his favoured central role but he continues to be inconsistent in that position.
He missed a clear header which could have settled the nerves for United in the second half. The other attacking midfielders like Ander Herrera, Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira, Mata needs to be decisive in the number 10 role and become the creative leader of the team.
Romero impresses in absence of De Gea
Manchester United suffered another blow as David De Gea suffered an injury during warmup. Sergio Romero started the match with no goalkeeper on the bench for the Red Devils.
The Argentine is known for his silly errors and has not played for the Old Trafford side since the Capital one Cup tie against Middlesbrough at the start of season.
Romero impressed on his return as he made crucial saves in the first half including a one on one situation against Kadlec. His distribution was very good and surely if he continues to improve then he can be a good second choice goalkeeper for United.
Manchester United: Romero, Love, McNair, Smalling, Blind, Herrera (Schneiderlin 72), Carrick, Lingard, Mata (Pereira 77), Memphis, Martial Substitutes Not Used: Poole, Riley, Weir, Keane
