  • Anthony Martial scores late winner for United
  • Bailly and Jones return to starting line-up

Anthony Martial stepped off the bench to score the only goal of the game as Manchester United sealed a crucial three points. The win moves the Reds three points clear of their opponents.

After last weekends disappointing performance and result against Huddersfield Town. Jose Mourinho and his team knew they couldn’t afford to lose this game.

Mourinho opted for a back three of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling. With Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young operating as wing-backs.

At the top end of the pitch, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford were partnered in attack. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan operating as the number ten.

Few Chances In Opening Half

Manchester United started brightly with a cross from Lukaku being cut out by Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before it reached Rashford.

While Rashford tested the Frenchman when striking a free-kick from 35 yards. The Tottenham keeper was forced to tip the effort round the post.

Tottenham took control of the half from the 20 minute mark but failed to breakthrough the United backline.

The majority of Tottenham’s efforts came from long-range and failed to test De Gea in the United goal. They had half-chances through Heung-min Son, Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

United Create Early Chances In Second-Half

United came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second-half and looked like taking the lead when Lloris parried a shot from Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian international fired a lot shot at goal and Lloris couldn’t hold onto the ball. Just as Rashford looked set to score, Tottenham defender Ben Davies beat him to the ball and keep the scores level.

Moments later Mkhitaryan got down left-hand side of the Tottenham and reached the byline. He Looked to square the ball for Lukaku but was thwarted by an outstretched foot from Lloris.

Despite Tottenham having a lot of possession they were clearly missing the presence of Harry Kane.

Enter Martial

Mourinho made his first change on 65 minutes with Lingard replacing Mkhitaryan and five minutes later Martial entered the fray.

Replacing Rashford, a change we have seen many times this season. With one usually starting and being replaced by the other.

Only minutes after entering the game, Martial flicked the ball on for Matic, who found found Lukaku but Lloris thwarted United again.

At the other end of the pitch, Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen chipped the ball into box but Dele Alli could only help it past the post.

Moments after that miss from Alli, Lingard crossed the ball from the right-wing and Lukaku headed against the Tottenham post.

Just as the game looked like ending in a 0-0 draw, Martial beat his French counterpart in the Tottenham goal to give United the three points.

The winning goal came after 82 minutes. De Gea played the ball forward, Lukaku flicked the ball and Martial applied the finishing touch.

Tottenham couldn’t hit back and the three points leave United with 23 points from ten games.

Next Up For United

Next up for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United are Benfica at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

They will be looking to make four wins out of four in the group stages before heading to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League next weekend.
