Manchester United clinched a scrappy 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday to advance to the next round of the FA Cup. The Red Devils endured a very frustrating game as they were not able to break a resilient defence of the visitors.
Louis Van Gaal made some changes from the team that faced Swansea last weekend. Matteo Darmian and Borthwick-Jackson started in the defence replacing Phil Jones and Ashley Young.
Marouane Fellaini started in midfield along with Bastian Schweinsteiger replacing the rested midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. Will Keane who was back from a loan from Preston was also included in the squad.
Manchester United started the match very timidly as the Red Devils enjoyed a lion’s share of possession but they were too stagnant in the final third.
They created very few chances in the first half and had only one shot which was also not on target. The home side didn’t allow Sheffield to create any chances as Chris Smalling and Daley Blind were rock solid and didn’t allow any attacker to flourish in the final third for the visitors.
After a disappointing first half Manchester United tried to get things going in the second half. The fullbacks and the flank players were able to reach till the final easily but failed to create anything.
Van Gaal brought in Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard for Juan Mata and Ander Herrera in order to bring directness in the attack.
Depay was a breathe of fresh air as he was taking on his man was trying to beat the goalkeeper with his long range shots.
United suffered a injury setback when Schweinsteiger suffered a blow on his knee. The German though carried on but could be doubtful for next game.
Depay continued to be direct in the final third and he was finally rewarded when he forced a foul on him in the final third which resulted to a penalty for United.
Wayne Rooney slotted home with a thumping penalty which was enough for United to go through in the next round.
