League Cup Final History

By Andrew Hyslop

  • Ninth appearance in the League Cup final
  • Looking for fifth success
  • Repeat of 1976 FA Cup Final

Manchester United face Southampton in the League Cup final on Sunday afternoon looking to win the competition for a fifth time. Success would also give Jose Mourinho his first major trophy as United manager.

Manchester United have lifted the League Cup on four previous occasions with all those successes coming up the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. With the last success coming in 2010.

This will be the club’s ninth appearance in the final of the competition, with the first coming against Liverpool in 1983. That final ended in a 2-1 defeat after extra-time.

Their next appearance in the final wouldn’t come until the 1991 final against Sheffield Wednesday and once again United were on the losing side.

First Success

Alex Ferguson took his side back to the final a year later. This time facing Nottingham Forest and a solitary strike from Brian McClair gave the reds their first success in the competition.

It would be fourteen years before Manchester United lifted the trophy again though. After final defeats to Aston Villa in 1994 and Liverpool in 2003. Sir Alex Ferguson led his side to League Cup final glory against Wigan Athletic in 2006.

That success over Wigan was the start of Manchester United lifting the trophy three times in the space of four seasons. The final against Wigan saw United winning the trophy with a 4-0 scoreline. Goals coming from Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney (2) and Louis Saha.

Successful Defence Of The Trophy

2009 saw United back in the final. This time facing Tottenham Hotspur and the Red Devils would need a penalty shootout to lift the trophy for a third time, with goalkeeper Ben Foster the hero.

The trophy was successfully defended by Sir Alex Ferguson and his team in 2010.  Defeating Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. Wayne Rooney was once again on the scoresheet. Scoring the winning goal on 74 minutes to give Manchester United their fourth success in the competition.

Can Jose Mourinho become the first manager other than Sir Alex to win the competition for Manchester United or will Southampton once again defeat United in a final?
