- United under-21s make it eight wins on the trot
- Doubles from Januzaj and Keane seal victory
Adnan Januzaj and Will Keane were the stars of the show Manchester United under-21s made it eight wins on the trot with a 4-0 victory over Southampton.
Both players have recently returned to United after loan spells. Keane with Preston North End and Januzaj with Borussia Dortmund.
United named a strong line-up that also included Sergio Romero, Paddy McNair and Andreas Pereira. Keane’s two goals made it five goals for him in two games since returning to United.
Januzaj, making his first appearance for United since his return opened the scoring in the dying seconds of the first-half. His 20-yard deflected wide of Gazzaniga and nestled in the corner of his net.
United looked to build on there lead early in the second-half and the second came when Varela crossed for Keane to head home.
Keane got his second and United’s third on 69 minutes. The goal came from the penalty spot after a neat one-two between Pereira and Januzaj had seen the Belgium tugged back in the penalty area.
The rout was completed by Januzaj on 79 minutes who slotted home left-footed after being played in by Keane. The Belgium was withdrawn a few minutes later.
The win leaves United second in the league, six points behind Sunderland with three games in hand.
Van Gaal will be glad to see the under-21 side performing so well as it provides competition for places in the first-team. I’m sure a number of these players will be given opportunities in the first-team in the coming months.
Manchester United: Romero, Varela, Williams, McNair, Love, Fosu-Mensah (Riley 72), Willock, Januzaj (El Fitouri 81), Andreas Pereira, Weir, Keane Substitutes Not Used: Joel Pereira, Redmond, Rashford
