There are not many Manchester United fans who would have believed that Marouane Fellaini would become such a crucial player for them this time last year. Signed by David Moyes on 2nd September 2013 for £27.5 million from Everton. This transfer went through at the very last second of the summer transfer despite United being continually linked with Fellaini ever since Moyes had moved from Goodison Park to Old Trafford to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.
Last season Fellaini was highlighted by many United fans as someone who wasn’t anywhere near good enough for United and was a typical Moyes player. He failed to impress many United fans. For the majority of his appearances last season for United and Moyes he was played in centre of a midfield two and clearly struggled in this position. Despite regularly getting on the score sheet for Everton, he failed to do so for United. At times last season I feel he looked lost especially when playing at Old Trafford. I feel he didn’t know what Moyes wanted him to do on the pitch. Moyes was afraid to use him as he did at Everton due to the feel of United fans saying we’re not Everton but if you have a player like Fellaini you need to play to his strengths.
At the start of this season it looked very much like he would be on his way out of United, he came off the bench in a pre-season friendly against Valencia at Old Trafford. He was booed by sections of the Old Trafford crowd but scored the winning goal in injury time. Was this the start of the turning point in his United career? He was still a bit part player for United but has gradually forced his way into Louis Van Gaal’s starting eleven, scoring some vital goals.
Van Gaal said of Fellaini’s good form that it is all down to the player. He said he works hard in training and when you ask him to do something he will do it. He also when said when he plays he has been recently I can not change him.
