- Rooney left out of 18 man travelling squad
- Youngsters Regan Poole, James Weir and Joe Riley all included
Manchester United travel to Denmark to face FC Midtjylland in the first-leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. United will be looking bounce back from a disappointing performance and result against Sunderland.
Manager Louis Van Gaal has travelled to Denmark without a number of first-team regulars, either through injury or his choice.
Captain Wayne Rooney is one of those names missing from the 18 man squad that has travelled for the tie. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has also been left at home.
Van Gaal has included several of the club’s under-21s side and they could be set for their first-team debuts. These include Regan Poole, James Weir and Joe Riley.
While Will Keane and Donald Love both make the trip after substitute appearances against Sunderland at the weekend.
As expected Darmian doesn’t make the trip after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Sunderland. Meaning United go into this game missing six players through injury who could play in the full-back areas.
While a seventh in Borthwick-Jackson has been left at home, the manager has revealed his absence is due to illness.
Another staying at home is Rooney, with reports that the striker may have suffered knee ligament damage and could be out for up to two months.
Travelling Squad: De Gea, Romero, Love, McNair, Smalling, Blind, Poole, Riley, Carrick, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Pereira, Weir, Mata, Memphis, Martial, Keane
Though Van Gaal isn’t afraid to blood younger players, he won’t want to throw too many in at once. Given that we expect Blind to move to left-back with McNair partnering Smalling in the middle. With Donald Love starting at right-back.
In midfield we Carrick and Schneiderlin to continue with a combination of Lingard, Herrera and Memphis in front of them. With Martial playing through the middle.
FC Midtjylland play in the Danish Superliga, the league is currently on a winter break. Their last competitive game was the final game in the Europa League group stages on December 10 2015.
FC Midtjylland are the defending champions having won the league for the first time in 2015 and currently sit 3rd in the table.
They prefer to play 4-1-4-1 formation and Mikkel Duelund is one player that Louis Van Gaal and his coaching will identified as a threat.
The 18 year-old attacking midfielder has six goals and three assists to date this season.
