  • De Gea feels he has to renew if he’s going to play

De Gea looked destined to be playing for Real Madrid for the immediate future but following the collapse of his move to the Spanish capital. Is he set to sign a new deal in Manchester?

Spanish newspaper AS are reporting that De Gea will indeed sign a new contract with the Red Devils just days after his move to Real collapse as he watched on from his girlfriend’s house. As Spanish journalist Guillem Balague reported that De Gea had even got himself a new suit in preparation of his presentation as a Real Madrid player.

Before the move back to Spain collapse De Gea, had already signed a five-year contract with Madrid and was planning his life in Madrid with girlfriend Edurne. AS reports that De Gea agent Jorge Mendes has already set the wheels in motion for De Gea to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

The paper states that De Gea met with his agent on Tuesday and came to the mutual decision that he needs to sign a new contract if he is going play the games he needs to be the Spanish No.1 at this summers European Championships. Mendes has apparently already had discussions with United executives and has urged them to resolve the situation. The feeling is that Van Gaal will refuse to play him unless he signs a new deal.

Del Bosque: De Gea Needs To Play

De Gea has made five appearances so far for Spain but remains second choice behind the man he would have replaced at Real, Iker Casillas. If he’s going to become the Spanish No.1 by the time the European championships come around he will need to play.

When asked about the goalkeepers situation, Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque implied that De Gea needs to play regularly if he is going to part of the squad that goes to Euros.

I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn’t play it will be very difficult for him to come (to the Euros)

Whether De Gea does renew or not, it doesn’t change his desire to move back home, for personal reasons. if he does sign all will guarantee is that United will receive a fee for De Gea, rather than him moving for free next summer.
