Carry On Spending

Carry On Spending

This mornings back pages of all the national newspapers are reporting that Manchester United will continue to spend big next summer. So is it a slow news week and these papers just need something to ensure that they sell papers or has someone within the club briefed the media that United have money to spend. I believe it is the latter as all the papers are reporting the same stories, not just one or two of them.

How Big Will United's Summer Transfer Budget Be?
How Big Will United’s Summer Transfer Budget Be?

The reports vary on the how much United manager Louis Van Gaal will have at his disposal in the summer transfer window. With the figures being reported from £100 million to £150 million to £200 million. The Guardian are reporting that Manchester United will follow the Real Madrid strategy of signing an elite player for every position. They say according to senior figures that Van Gaal will not have to work to a budget and a World Record Transfer Bid may be sanctioned by the club. They also report that Van Gaal wants a midfielder, a right-back, one or two centre-backs, a wide player and potentially a striker. With Kevin Strootman, Mats Hummels, Diego Godin, Arjen Robben and Dani Alves all being identified as potential targets for Van Gaal and United. Meanwhile The Mirror is reporting all the same targets, saying that Robben and Nathaniel Clyne are Van Gaal’s top targets, reporting that United have spent £215 million since September 2013 and will take their spending past the £350 million in the next two transfer windows.

To be honest I can’t really see United doing much business in the January transfer window unless any of Van Gaal’s transfer targets become available. Whether the targets mentioned in todays papers are the real targets for Manchester United and Van Gaal remains to be seen. I think the only thing I can safely say is its going to be an exciting time for Manchester United fans in the next few transfer windows as Van Gaal continues to move out the players he doesn’t want and bring in the ones he wants as he looks to shape his Manchester United squad for the challenge of getting back in the Champions League and then putting in a real challenge for the Premier League Title and Champions League next season.
